Knowing how to take good care of your clothes not only ensures that you’re making the most out of your pieces, but future owners will be receiving gorg ‘like new’ clothing that they’ll be obsessed with too. Here are some easy ways you can give your clothes a little TLC and extend their stay in your (or someone else’s) wardrobe! 

• Wash Less

• Spot Clean Stains

Let’s be real, you don’t really need to wash your skirt after one wear. Unless you’ve been out clubbing and your strawberry cocktail made a guest appearance on your ‘fit, your skirt is probably clean! If you can, spot-clean the stain and leave it out to dry. 

After a few wears, pop your clothing item in the wash on a cold cycle and pop it on the clothesline. Wear and tear can occur when you put your clothes in the dryer; sometimes the old school method is best!

Now that you’ve taken good care of your clothes and decided which ones you’re parting ways with, it’s time to snap some pics! A good photo is just *chefs kiss* and can make the world of a difference when it comes to making sales. If you’re in the mood to model the clothes yourself, amazing! If not, a flat-lay pic is perf. 

You don’t need some expensive high-tech camera to take bomb pics, your phone will do just fine! If there’s one thing all professional photos have, it’s amazing lighting. You can get this yourself by opening up your curtains and letting in some beautiful natural light. Use whatever light sources you have and get creative! Lay out your clothes on a plain(ish) surface or hang them up in front of a cute background and snap away!

1. Find a neutral background (or hang up a white sheet!) to take your photos.
   Ensure the light is facing you for optimal quality. I prefer to use the LENSBUDDY app, but feel free to use normal camera.

2. Flip camera to the square setting & on selfie mode. Set timer to 10 photos, 3 seconds apart with sound on. Pose each time the timer goes off so that you have at least 1x usable front, side & back shot. Make sure the item looks as flattering as possible. For the 4th photo, take either a detail shot or a creative style shot (pose with props, selfie angle, mix up the poses etc.)

3. Try to only show the item you are selling e.g for a top, don’t show full pants. Crop in so it’s super clear what you are selling

4. Thumbs up all favourites & export to camera roll.

5. Minimally edit colours to be vibrant, clear & crisp. (Ensure colours are true to real-life)

Once you’re happy with your content, it’s time to find the right platform. This can be tricky, especially if you’ve never done it before. If you plan on doing this more than once, Depop is a great option. If you’re just having a once-off wardrobe clean out, Facebook Marketplace is super easy!

• Local Markets! (Check your local lockdown rules)

Depop can be a great place to start as it has no sign up or subscription fee, but will take a 10% commission on any items you sell. However, it is a place where you can build a reputation and become a frequent seller. Plus, everyone on Depop is super fashionable and cool, (so they’ll defs be buying your Princess Polly ‘fits).

Eve’s tip:

1. Create a new listing in Depop, upload images
   1. Creative 2. Front 3. Side 4. Back

2. Describe the item as accurately as possible. Include 5 hashtags.

3. Make sure you state any imperfections here and make sure it is visible in at least 1 of your photos.

When you think about your plan, you should consider how you’re going to get your clothes to their new owners. Here are some questions you should ask yourself:

• How am I going to package and send my items?

• Do I want to personalize my packaging? 

• How much will shipping cost?

• When can I do this? How long will it take?

• How much am I selling these for?

When you can answer these questions, you’re almost ready to go live! Pro tip: Depending on the item, marking your clothes down by 25% from their original price is a good place to start. If you’re selling vintage clothes, research their market value and be prepared to negotiate!
